چکیده

Intensive monitoring of the innermost jet in the quasar 3C 279 at 43 GHz from 1998 March to 2001 April with the Very Long Baseline Array, in combination with previous observations, reveal (1) an increase in apparent speed from 5c to 17c and (2) a change in projected direction of the jet by 20 . These effects could result from a small increase in the intrinsic viewing angle of the jet nozzle from P0 .5 to P1 .6, with no increase required in the actual speed of the flow, which corresponds to a Lorentz factor k 20. The Lorentz factor 20 and viewing angle 0 .5 imply that the Doppler factor is at least 39 close to the core; this extreme value explains the high flux density and rapid variability of 3C 279 across the electromagnetic spectrum.

Jet Collimation in Action: Re-alignment on Kiloparsec Scales in 3c 279

We report a change in the trajectory of a well studied jet component of the quasar 3C 279. The component changes in apparent projected speed and direction, and we find it to be moving with a Lorentz factor γ & 15 at an initial angle of . 1◦ to the line of sight. The new trajectory of the component has approximately the same speed and direction as an earlier superluminal feature, originally seen...

Time Variable Faraday Rotation Measures of 3c 273 & 3c 279

Multifrequency polarimetry with the VLBA confirms the previously reported timevarying Faraday rotation measure (RM) in the quasar 3C 279. Variability in the RM and electric vector position angle (EVPA) of the jet component (C4) is seen making it an unreliable absolute EVPA calibrator. 3C 273 is also shown to vary its RM structure on 1.5 year time-scales. Variation in the RM properties of quasar...

Detection of Optical Synchrotron Emission from the Radio Jet of 3c 279

We report the detection of optical and ultraviolet emission from the kiloparsec scale jet of the well-known quasar 3C 279. A bright knot, discovered in archival V and U band Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Camera images, is coincident with a peak in the radio jet ∼0.6 from the nucleus. The detection was also confirmed in Wide Field Planetary Camera-2 images. Archival Very Large Array and ME...

Mean Velocity and Static Pressure in a Sharp-edge Circular Nozzle Jet

An axisymmetric jet issued from a sharp edged circular convergent nozzle has been studied experimentally in the near field at Reynolds number 5.3x104  to search the saddle shape behavior of mean velocity and the role of mean static pressure in the jet flow. Due to the vena contracta effect the centerline mean velocity of the jet increases about 4.2% of its exit value and corresponding decrease ...

Magnetic Fields in Quasar Cores II

Multi-frequency polarimetry with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) telescope has revealed absolute Faraday Rotation Measures (RMs) in excess of 1000 rad m−2 in the central regions of 7 out of 8 strong quasars studied (e.g., 3C 273, 3C 279, 3C 395). Beyond a projected distance of ∼20 pc, however, the jets are found to have |RM| < 100 rad m−2. Such sharp RM gradients cannot be produced by clust...
